Deputy Director of Economic Development & Tourism

Robert Briggs currently serves as the Deputy Director of Economic Development & Tourism, where he plays a pivotal role in shaping the economic landscape through strategic initiatives and partnerships. His journey to this position is marked by a diverse and impactful career that spans public service, law enforcement, and military service.

Before assuming his current role, Robert was the Operations Manager of Special Projects for the Southlake City Manager’s Office from January 2021 to February 2024. In this capacity, he led the creation of the City’s second Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone, established an incentive agreement management process, and played a critical role in the Executive Leadership Team overseeing the areas of risk, project, grant, and knowledge management. His efforts have significantly contributed to the city’s strategic development and operational excellence.

From June 2011 to January 2021, Robert dedicated his expertise to the Southlake Police Department as a Peace Officer. During his decade of police service, he excelled in many different roles including patrol officer, criminal investigator, Honor Guard member, and North Tarrant Regional SWAT operator. As a criminal investigator specializing in intimate partner violence and crimes against children, he led over 400 investigations, demonstrating a profound attention to detail and incredible ability to manage time effectively. Robert also pioneered the Southlake Police Department Internship Program, nurturing the next generation of law enforcement and public service professionals.

Robert’s commitment to service extends even further back to his time in the US Army Reserves as an Electronics Intelligence Analyst from September 2003 to September 2016. During his military service, he was assigned to support various NSA missions and overseas training. In 2009-2010 he was deployed to Paktika, Afghanistan where he led a Low-Level Voice Intercept team. His distinguished service during this deployment was recognized with several honors, including the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Action Badge.

Robert holds a B.A. in Criminology & Criminal Justice from The University of Texas at Arlington and an Executive Master of Public Service and Administration from The Bush School of Government & Public Service at Texas A&M University. Further enhancing his skill-set, he earned a Coursera project management certificate and a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt in 2023.

Additional recognition of Robert’s exemplary service includes multiple commendations from the Southlake City Manager and the Southlake Police Department Director’s Award.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Robert is a devoted husband and father, an avid bibliophile, and passionate Texas Ranger’s fan. He actively engages in his community by coaching his son’s youth baseball team and supporting his daughter’s volleyball and soccer. Robert’s dedication to his family, community, and profession exemplifies his comprehensive approach to leadership and service.
